Domestic agricultural producers in Croatia will soon enjoy greater visibility on supermarket shelves, the country’s agriculture minister announced at the Days of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry held in Tuhelj.
The planned changes will make it easier for consumers to identify the origin of products, a move the government believes could help boost domestic production despite the challenges faced by the sector, reports HRT
Speaking at the event, David Vlajčić, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said that a new regulation on country-of-origin labelling is currently being prepared.
“We are working on a new rulebook on labelling the country of origin in shops. There will be changes, particularly regarding the size of the font used to display origin information. The price may be clearly visible, but so too must be the country of origin,” Vlajčić said.
He added that transparent labelling is essential for consumers to know where their food comes from and expressed confidence that clearer information would encourage shoppers to choose local products.
“I believe that everyone will choose Croatian products, because Croatian is the best — produced by our own farmers,” the minister said.
The government hopes that improved visibility and clearer labelling will strengthen consumer trust and provide additional support to domestic farmers in an increasingly competitive retail market.
