Self defence classes have been organised for women following spate of violent attacks in Birmingham and the Black Country.

Single mother Sanni Aujla said she wanted to organise them in Sutton Coldfield after being worried about her safety since incidents in Oldbury, Halesowen, Wolverhampton, Walsall and Birmingham.

"As a runner I used to go out on my own, and since we've had the recent attacks on women, especially Asian women, I felt quite unsafe," she said.

"I haven't been for a run on my own since."

In September, a Sikh woman was attacked and raped in Oldbury. A second woman was raped in Walsall in October in a separate incident.

West Midlands Police described both as racially aggravated with a 32-year-old man later charged over the Walsall attack.

  2. Good on them for getting some excersise and learning some helpful tactics for avoiding certain situations. But let’s be honest, they are not going to be defending themselves with martial arts from a male attacker. It’s about time women were allowed pepper spray or a taser, something that can equalise the situation.

  3. The shitty thing about these classes though is that they give a false sense of security.

    The average woman is not a physical match for the average man, if a guy grabs your body (wrist for example and not clothes) you’re very unlikely to break that hold.

    Your goals are to get away as fast as possible and be aware of your surroundings (stay away from isolated areas).

  5. Self-defence classes are almost always (more than 99%) utter bollocks. Statistically, nothing you learn in one will help you against an attacker who has criminal intent.

    Also, TKD sucks balls.

  6. If you’re going out by yourself at night then you’re better off carrying something like a self-defense torch. Basic ones are little more than a heavy duty metal torch but brands like Klarus have incredibly bright 3.3k lumen handheld LED flashlights with a strobe setting. It might not sound like much but in the dark you can easily dazzle someone for long enough to get away. If you get grabbed then you can risk using the metal strike ring but your chances are probably no better than whatever self-defence technique they teach. No harm in self-defence but it’s easy to feel over-confident when the first, second and third rules of self-defence should be to get away as fast as possible. Something like a torch enables that and is legal to carry.

  8. But if a woman has a pepper spray to defend herself, she’s the criminal. The laws in this country are a fucking joke. Joke.

  9. For a woman to be a ke to defend her self properly against an average man I would say Jiu jitsu 3 to 4 times a week for 4 – 6 years. (I’m a purple belt and trained with female world champions and seen seasoned females train with new men)

  11. As a boy I was repeatedly taught at school (mainly by women, of course) that self defence is bad and wrong and makes you “just as bad as they are”. Was I lied to, and it is actually a good thing…?

  12. I think everyone should be given self defence classes, and encouraged to take them. Men are assaulted by strangers more frequently, too, which is why I suggest it

    Just let people carry pepper spray for fuck’s sake, a self defense class isn’t going to do shit for a girl under 16 getting attacked by an adult male.

  15. Anything but fixing the problem or allowing self defence weapons. You want to import a problem then you have to enable equality realistic solutions.

    Someone suggests self-defence classes for women: “Reeeeeeeee no that’s bad what if women use it to attack men reeeeeeeeee!”.

    Survey results show women feel unsafe around men regardless of skin colour: “reeeeeee what about men attacked by women reeeeeeeeeee!”
