Denmark will end letter delivery on December 30, 2025, after more than 400 years.  Denmark is the first country to end postal mail, but it probably won’t be the last.  Letter volumes have fallen worldwide as electronic messages have become the norm for text communication.

Denmark’s postal mail volume has dropped by over 90% since the start of the century, compared with an average drop of 50%-60% in other countries of Europe and North America. This is because Denmark has had a sustained government policy of promoting electronic transactions between government, business, and individuals. Most Danes carry even their driving licenses and health cards digitally, on their phones, instead of as physical pieces of paper and plastic.

At the current rates, other European countries and America will reach the same point of decline in 20-50 years,  but changes in government policy and infrastructure could speed that up significantly.

According to the USPS report Projecting Mail Volume: Future Trends and Implications for the Postal Service, the US will be feeling the bite in 10 years, but should still be viable:

The baseline scenario predicts a 29 percent decline in combined First-Class and Marketing Mail volume, falling from 98.2 billion pieces in 2025 to 70.1 billion pieces by 2035. The best- and worst-case scenarios range from a relatively modest 14 percent decline to a much larger 41 percent decline in combined First-Class Mail and Marketing Mail volumes from 2025 to 2035, falling from 102 billion pieces in 2024 to 85.4 billion in the best case and 56.6 billion pieces in the worst case.

But we can clearly see the outline of a future without mail.
