Just in case anyone thinks the system *isnt* rigged in favour of the rich and influential. The two welsh guys that found a hoard of gold in Herefordshire a few years back that could have been worth up to £7,000,000 got 10 years apiece after not declaring it and refusing to disclose that they did with it. The sentencing was partly due to the historical significance of the missing coins (they change the narrative of British history due to the depiction on the coins) but also due to the scale of the crime in terms of financial value. The rationale used was if you commit fraud to the tune of several million the sentence must reflect that vs a sentence for fraud for a few thousand pounds. Not saying those fellas shouldn’t have been sentenced but the accepted rationale in their sentencing, if applied to Mone et al, would definitely have seen a lengthy custodial sentence imposed. Without these penalties for the rich nothing changes
If someone on benefits managed to defraud the DWP out of more than £2000, they will be prosecuted, fined or jailed and will have no option but to pay every single penny back. The rich just say, oh, sorry about that 148 million and move on with their rich life
