Why is HLN using a pair of black hands as an illustration next to an article about apenpokken?

  1. Because it is a disease found in Africa and therefore most images illustrating the disease have black people in them…?

  2. Probably because the disease is almost exclusively found in Africa so most pictures of people suffering from it will be pictures of African people. It’s not a racism thing

  3. Maybe their image database only has pictures of black hands since the disease originated in Africa, but the question should be why only black hands. I’d also like to know how it looks like on different skin colors to be able to recognize the disease.
Skin diseases tend to look different on different skin colors.

  4. Given that the origin is said to be African, it stands to reason the available stock photography is going to involve African patients.

If they consistently keep doing it going forward, that’s another matter.
