A 77-year-old woman died after she was hit by her own car in a shopping centre car park two days before Christmas on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane.

Emergency services were called to the car park of a Woolworths shopping centre on Poinciana Avenue in Tewantin – about 10 kilometres inland from Noosa Heads – shortly before 4pm on Tuesday.

Police said the woman’s Volkswagen T-Cross rolled backwards, hitting her.

Paramedics treated the 77-year-old Tewantin local in the car park for significant head injuries, but she died at the scene.

The woman’s death comes days after Queensland’s peak road safety body warned the state was just several fatalities away from recording its highest road death toll in 15 years.

A Queensland police spokesperson said the woman’s death, however, would not be added to the road toll because she was fatally struck on private property owned by the centre.

On Wednesday, officers were preparing a report for the coroner.
