Funeral service information for Iowa soldiers killed in ISIS ambush
The Iowa National Guard on Tuesday released information about visitation and funeral services for Staff Sgts. Nate Howard and Edgar Torres-Tovar, the two soldiers killed earlier this month in Syria. Howard, 29, of Marshalltown, and Torres-Tovar, 25, of Des Moines, died in an attack by an ISIS gunman Dec. 13. An American civilian interpreter was also killed and three other Iowa soldiers were injured. The slain soldiers’ bodies will return to Iowa on Wednesday. According to the Iowa Army National Guard, the Iowa National Guard Honor Guard will conduct an honorable transfer of their remains in a private ceremony at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the 132d Wing, Air National Guard Base in Des Moines. Howard and Torres-Tovar were posthumously promoted from sergeant to staff sergeant “in recognition of their service and sacrifice,” according to a news release from the Iowa National Guard. “The Iowa National Guard extends its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and fellow Soldiers of Staff Sgt. Howard and Staff Sgt.
