The IDF has begun inducting a new fully Israeli made artillery system called the SIGMA 155 also known as Roem. This is the first major new ground combat platform to enter service since the Merkava tank.
Developed by Elbit Systems, the wheeled 155mm self propelled howitzer is designed to replace the aging M109s. It offers longer range precision fire, high automation, advanced command and control, and requires only three soldiers instead of seven.
After years of development and delays caused by the war and foreign supply disruptions, the system is now entering training, with the first operational battalion expected by the fall and wider deployment over the coming years.
Impact this might have on the IDF’s combat abilities, deterrence and geopolitical situation as far as things such as boycott attempts go:
The SIGMA 155 significantly improves the IDF’s ability to support maneuvering ground forces with fast accurate and flexible firepower, especially in a potential large scale conflict in the north.
Its high mobility allows artillery units to move and survive more effectively on the modern battlefield.
Because the system is fully Israeli made, it reduces dependence on foreign suppliers and limits the impact of arms embargoes, strengthening Israel’s strategic independence.
The reduced crew size helps solve long standing manpower shortages and enables broader integration of women in combat roles.
At the strategic level, the deployment of a modern indigenous artillery system strengthens deterrence, signals technological resilience to adversaries, and reinforces Israel’s ability to fight and sustain prolonged multi front conflicts under political and diplomatic pressure.
cutting-edge where?
