Tista’ taqra bil-
Malti.
There is a Maltese touch at the St Peter’s Basilica once more this Christmas, with a Maltese florist – David Grech – helping create the flower arrangements used to decorate the renowned church.
It is not Grech’s first stint at the Vatican, with the florist having received his first opportunity to work at the Holy See in 2023: perhaps fittingly, he was on a humanitarian mission when the offer arrived.
Grech is a nurse by profession, and he was leading a team of SOS Malta volunteers on a mission in eastern Turkey after a devastating February 2023 earthquake when a fellow florist who was part of the Vatican’s team asked whether he wished to arrange flowers at the Vatican during Holy Week.
Grech quickly applied and was duly accepted, joining an international team in decorating the church for Holy Week.
The Maltese florist has since been involved in decorating the basilica on multiple occasions, and this Christmas is no exception to the rule.
The delicate and intensive work was done on a strictly voluntary basis, though volunteering, of course, is nothing new for Grech, given his many years of involvement in SOS Malta’s humanitarian missions.
Grech shared his delight at the opportunity he was given to decorate the renowned basilica once more on such an occasion.
