Police have made an emergency declaration after what appears to have been a partial crane collapse on the Gold Coast.

Emergency services were called to the Gold Coast Highway at Southport at about 3:15pm on Thursday following reports of a crane and multiple powerlines being damaged in the vicinity.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said no-one was believed to have been injured as a result of the incident.

Queensland Police made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act before 4pm.

Members of the public were asked to avoid the area, and those within the exclusion zone – which spans the Gold Coast Highway, North Street, Loders Creek and the Broadwater – were asked to remain indoors.

Emergency services remain on the scene and are working to make the area safe.

It is not yet known what caused the damage.

The area was hit by a storm this afternoon, with wind gusts of 45 knots per hour, which is more than 80 km/h recorded at the Gold Coast Seaway, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
