Micthell Starc opens the bowling for Australia. England opens the batting with Zak Crawley and Noosa specialist Ben Duckett.
Duckett had a nervous first ball. He bunted a Starc yorker into the ground, but to the naked eye it looked like he had clipped a catch to gully.
The sides took an early tea break after the Australian innings.
Today’s record crowd at the MCG follows a different attendance record that was set at last year’s MCG Test.
Today’s mark of 93,442 – and still counting – is for a single day of cricket at the ground, or, of course, anywhere in Australia.
Last year’s record was for the crowd across the entire Test match. Over five days, 373,691 rocked up.
With Australia all out by tea on day one, it seems unlikely this Test will go the distance and put that record under threat.
