A person has died after being swept off the rocks at Fisherman’s Ledge, just south of Piha Beach, this afternoon.

Police said they were called to the scene around 12.30pm following a report a person had been washed away by waves.

The Police Eagle helicopter was deployed to help locate the person.

Surf Life Saving New Zealand confirmed this evening that surf lifeguards from the Paid Lifeguard Service, based at Piha Surf Life Saving Club, were called to the scene.

The person was found and taken back to shore via jet ski, where surf lifeguards began CPR, a Surf Life Saving spokesperson said.

St John paramedics took over resuscitation efforts upon arrival.

The person was confirmed dead at 1.20pm, the spokesperson said.

Their death will be referred to the coroner.
