Hi everyone,

I’m applying for a German student visa. I applied for student housing (Studierendenwerk), and after submitting my application, I received this email from them saying that I’m on the waiting list and that I need to wait.

My question is:

Is this email enough to submit to the embassy as proof of accommodation?

Or should I ask them for another official document or confirmation letter?

Would printing this email be sufficient?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. There is no proof of accommodation. You are registered, yes, but there is no promise that you will get a room, you’re just on the list.

Edit to add: The studentenwerk typically only has a few hundred apartments, while the demand is usually much higher. Whether you’ll actually get a room in the end is far from certain; usually, more applications are rejected than accepted.

  2. Look for WG or other temporary accommodation. Hotel, Hostel, motel, Airbnb etc.

WG is usually the best but dependent on case by case

  3. This email is unlikely to count as a proof of accommodation as it’s only a waiting list and you’re not guaranteed to get it.
As an option you could get yourself a refundable Airbnb booking for a month or so which you would then either actually use as the first place to stay after you arrive or potentially cancel if you’re lucky enough to get that dorm room fast.
