Replacing fossil-based products with EU-made bio-based alternatives can reduce the global environmental impacts of our consumption habits, as many of these supply chains rely on oil extraction from non-EU countries.Â
Developing bio-based sectors will help bring back to the EU industries that have been relocated abroad, often to countries with lower environmental and social standards. This will mean products with lower carbon footprints and less environmental impact. The bioeconomy is therefore an opportunity to rebuild Europe’s industrial base and ensure fair environmental competition globally.
By exporting expertise and technology, the EU encourages global adoption of cleaner, safer production methods.
