  1. SS: Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent state. And now, Taiwan welcomed the move, calling Israel, Somaliland, and Taiwan like-minded democratic partners that share values of democracy, freedom, and rule of law.

Israel has friendly but mostly informal ties with Taiwan, while Taiwan and Somaliland have maintained official relations since 2020, including representative offices in each other’s capitals.

  2. Taiwan was both ahead of the curve on this one (by actually having had diplomatic ties with Somaliland for some years now) and is also in a geopolitical position that would benefit from a minor divergence from tradition when it comes to international recognition.

  3. Illegitimate states that recognize other illegitimate states. In 10 or 20 years, none of those states will exist.

  4. Taiwan and Ukraine are the only liberal democracies with a spine these days. It’s noteworthy that the liberal democracies under the least amount of threat are the most cowardly and prone to empty virtue signalling. Almost like it’s cause and effect.

  5. Main question is, has Ilhan Omar and ilk recognized Somaliland — people who are quite outspoken on freedom and democracy? They love putting their nose into matter of other countries but in their own birth region!

    Congratulations Somaliland 🎊

  6. “Israel has friendly but mostly informal ties with Taiwan” is burying the lede a bit. Israel, like the vast majority of the world, doesn’t recognize Taiwan as a state. It’s one thing upsetting Somalia, Turkey and Egypt. It’s another thing to upset China, one of Israel’s largest trade partners, that has been making increasingly serious investments in Israel in the last decade.

Beyond that, “breaking ranks”? Taiwan recognized Somaliland already. And it’s not really in the “ranks” of the countries that would conceivably be upset by this move, but very obviously in the group that would welcome it.

Weird framing from this TOI piece overall.

  7. I look forward to every leftist on reddit being pissed off about this decision, they only back independent statehood when it can be used to attack the west.
