Pierre Brincat, one of the pillars behind the development of women’s football in Malta, is set to retire from his job after years of sterling service to the game.
In a statement, the Malta Football Association announced that Brincat is set to retire from his job as Director of Women’s Football and paid a fitting tribute to the veteran administrator.
“As 2025 draws to a close, the Women’s Football Department within the Malta FA prepares to bid farewell to the Director of Women’s Football, Mr Pierre Brincat,” a statement said.
“A dedicated and long-standing advocate for the women’s game in Malta, Brincat began his journey as a club coach before making history in 2003 as head coach of Malta’s first-ever women’s national team to compete internationally.
“Over the course of his tenure, Brincat led the national side in 58 official matches between 2003 and 2014, guiding the team through a period of gradual progress and rising competitiveness on the international stage.”
The Malta FA statement said that Brincat’s most significant milestone as coach was leading the team to qualification to the main qualifying round of the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
“His most significant milestone came with Malta’s historic qualification to the main qualifying round of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup – finishing top of their preliminary group ahead of Latvia, Albania, and Luxembourg – a defining moment for women’s football in the country,” the statement continued.
“After stepping away from the touchline, Brincat took on the role of Director of Women’s Football, continuing to drive the long-term growth and strategic development of the women’s programme.
“Today, he leaves behind a structure and pathway that are considerably stronger than when he first assumed the role.
“Thank you for the dedication, passion, and years of service you gave to women’s football in Malta.
“Enjoy your well-earned retirement — you will always be part of this journey.”
