Tory MP Lee Anderson Says People Use Food Banks Because They ‘Can’t Cook Or Budget’

  1. Let’s see some of these MPs budget on the earnings the low paid are getting..they wouldn’t last a month I bet.

  2. What irked me about this guy is he wants to put even more barriers in front of people desperate for food. You can’t have a food parcel unless you register for a cooking course and a budgeting course. No wonder they don’t want to go there if they have to deal with this amount of shaming and condescension.

  3. Foodbanks dont cook the food for you, you still get raw ingredients, and if you’re lucky you can cook it at home.

  4. The guy has been an MP for 3 years.

He has advocated forced labour camps, is active on sites that support Tommy Robinson, and has been investigated for anti-semitism.

The bloke is an absolute travesty of a human being and the best thing he could do is shut the fuck up because every time he opens his mouth he reminds more and more people he exists.

  5. When it’s the right honorable weasel himself has likely never cooked for himself or budgeted for anything before. These people are so braindead and blind to the world and it’s fucking terrible.

  6. > “When people come now for a food parcel they have to register for a budgeting course and a cooking course,” he said.

So these people who are already struggling have to take time out of their day to go to this pointless exercise that’s in place to dismiss their issues and demean them. This will put people off using this particular food bank and I suppose that’s partly the point, to be able to say *’see, there’s no need!’*

  7. Used to live in his constituency before I moved. There were homeless people camped outside Tesco in the freezing cold even 3 years ago. Food banks were overrun even then.

  8. Is there anything stopping a MP from taking a graph of costs of living over time and one of wages over time and showing them to the fuckwits that run the country? Just in the next PMQ drag in 2 big sheets of paper with them printed on there

  9. I have nothing but contempt for this POS, people are literally starving in this country while oil companys break records. If people could afford cooking classes they wouldn’t be going to a fucking foodbank, you thick cunt. Most of the food is pre-cooked in cans because it’s cheap and has a long shelf. You still have to cook the food, you out of touch, offensively moronic, little jizzrag. I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire and I wouldn’t even stop to laugh. Sorry for the rant, folks.

  10. Wow..not an MP that should be representing anyone, anywhere..I am not even British but found it a very disgusting comment..

brits get rid of him…let him be poor for awhile..maybe he will sing a different tune after going to the food bank..

We know politicians cannot budget..look at the state of the world..so he only has the foodbank ..good luck Mr Anderson you piece of shit

  11. On a daily basis, conservatives prove they’re either sociopathic, stupid or both.

If a labour or liberal democrat politician said the same thing, it would be shocking. No one is shocked in the slightest that a tory said this.

If anyone read or heard what he said, without knowing who it was, and were asked to bet on whether it was a conservative or not who had said it, they’d bet their life on it being a conservative.

  12. Tory MPs are Tory MPs because they can’t do proper jobs and they’re fuck all use to society in any other sense. Basically all shit-tier Internet trolls paid from the public purse.

  13. Maybe he should show everyone how it’s done by spending some time on the dole, ideally the rest of his working life.

  14. Any Tory voters here? Can any of you honestly say this man and his ilk represent so called conservative values? Genuine question, hope it didn’t come across stand-offish (that being said, what a twat)

  15. There are many people who can neither cook nor budget, alas a form of poverty all by itself, but the large majority of them do not use food banks. There must be something else at play…

  16. Dead cat / distraction story. What’s the latest from party gate and why have they sent someone out to say something dumb to distract from it?

  17. Such a pathetic attempt at once again blaming the state of the country on made up “feckless” individuals. “Can’t cook…” It has been the same old bollocks they have been using to turn people against the poor of this country for the last ten years, bollocks to all of them .

  18. Trussel Trust foodbanks provide three days of food that can be stored at ambient temperatures and cooked at home to get people through an emergency situation whilst they get help. The distribution centres may work with other charities to provide fresh fruit and veg and baked goods. They may provide drinks, snacks and meals to all comers. The standard food parcels are designed for people with no medical problems or dietary requirements able to cook at home, assuming a meat and two veg kind of diet.

This week I have made Trussel Trust based food parcels for people with no cooking facilities and for people who have only kettles. I sometimes make food parcels for people with only a microwave.

This week, I have also made food parcels for people with restricted diets.

We will adjust the basic Trussel Trust box to meet peoples special needs when we are informed of that when the voucher is issued. This depends on what foods have been donated but we put foods aside for this purpose.

The basic TT food parcel for a single person weighs about 7.5kg. I pack them to weigh around 11.5kg and I sometimes I can get the weight up to 12kg. (I can pack a single persons food box in 90 seconds after doing my own picking!) People also receive a bonus bag of extra items that may not fit into our standard size boxes. We also provide toiletries, pet food and baby supplies if needed. We also provide school holiday clubs where children get to take home food for their families.

We pack food parcels that are taken to one of our 12 distribution centres and for front line workers from other charities and agencies.

In my area the TT funds advice workers and cooking lessons if you want them. We are able to provide cooking books donated by Jack Monroe and some printed by a local group. The aim is to provide emergency help and then address how to prevent further problems with wanted support not to add to the clients problems or dictate anything to them.

Although we are a Trussel Trust hub a lot of the food we process goes to people without vouchers and we support about 120 local charities. We will always give people appropriate food, voucher or no voucher. Without vouchers, auditing donations is much harder and the figures that we give to be collated by the TT are less precise. When the TT tells the government that so many people have needed meals it is because we are properly audited and all the centres are sending figures for collating.

If a Tory MP turns up at our facilities they will be sent away. I can and will lock them out. Other parties can make an appointment for a visit but I won’t be there.

Please donate if you can and always ask for help if you need it. Sadly, foodbanks may vary.

  19. This is so widespread. So many right wingers don’t understand the concept of systemic problems. People, to them, are poor because they are either lazy, stupid, bad at money management or because they didn’t work hard enough in school (in which case their struggles are a deserved punishment).

They need to believe this because their identity is wrapped up in the idea that they are successful because they deserve it.

  20. Pretty easy to ‘budget’ when you’re skimming £200,000 a year from the public purse in expenses.

    Fucking Tories man.

  21. The Trussel trust gave out 40,000 food parcels in 2010. In 2020 it was 2.6 million. I guess he’s saying two and a half million people forgot how to cook in the last 10 years.

  22. I don’t think I’ve ever wanted to punch anyone I’ve never met so much in my life. I remember when I was 6, my mum pawned my Xbox to pay rent. We had to live off spaghetti hoops with sausages on toast for a week with strict curfews on electric and heating even with the extra money from pawning the Xbox. Considering that the cost of living has only increased in the last decade+, in can only imagine what people in that situation nowadays have to do to survive.

This isn’t a “budgeting issue” Mr Anderson, it’s a “the Tory party is willing to let children starve in cold homes without basic amenities” issue! Fuck you
