THE COUPLE behind the Evesham shoebox appeal have returned from western Romania following a hugely successful campaign to bring festive cheer to children and families in need.

Paul and Alison Jeanes from Lower Moor, who led the annual Teams4u collection which assembled more than 13,00o boxes, made the five-day trip to Bihor County in mid-December with a small team to deliver thousands of items.

According to Paul, the trip didn’t just focus on the contents of each shoe box but on the “profound emotional effect” it had on the recipient bringing “moments of unbridled joy and recognition” to often-overlooked communities.

“The people reached by this initiative are often those facing significant social and economic challenges.

“Teams4u and its partners focus on giving the gifts in a way that builds a long-term commitment to these children and families,” he added.

Key communities and groups that benefit in the region include marginalised Roma communities due to the extreme poverty and isolation experienced, and very remote villages where people often live in make-shift shelters.

Vulnerable children and families receive shoeboxes distributed through established partnerships with local schools, nurseries, schools and foster homes to reach those most in need.

Paul said that basic necessities are scarce and it was unlikely that children would to receive a Christmas gift.

“The distribution aims to provide not only a moment of joy but also practical items such as toiletries and school supplies that contribute to the children’s well-being throughout the year,” Paul added.
