Outstanding! Well done and enjoy the well deserved pints.
Congratulations! Maynooth’s a great spot.
Post college pints are standard practice in maths and computer science, you’re getting ahead on the study!
Maith thú, lad. Best of luck to you. That course will leave you with a lot of options for the future.
Did software.
My advice for college would be to make a StackOverflow account and get used to going on there when you’re stuck
Well done. It’s probably the proudest pint your dad will ever have and he’ll remember it
Best of luck
All things start out this way, a parent raises a child the child shows up and kicks ass because the parents are awesome.
Cheers! Even if the math sucks and computer science can be slow, remember there are always ways to get into exciting careers with a computer science and math degree. You stay on it, find a smart study partner, focus! You got this champ!
Well done and best of luck. Cherish days like this with yer da also. I’d say he is beyond proud of you.
Best of luck champ
Congratulations Maynooth is a great spot. Your dad must be very proud.
Well done! Good to celebrate your successes
Jesus tell your dad to stop drinking that bulmers shite and get onto the stout
Huge congrats. Maynooth is a great spot. Very good course, my brother met his wife in it! Best of luck for the coming years
Best wishes from a SWE in the US!
Hoping this’ll be me and the old man in a couple months celebrating my UCL acceptance. Have a good one boss
Maynooth is an absolutely cracking spot. I had the best three years of my life there. Well done.
Well done! Get on the mailing lists for cesi and cesi.cs. There’s a massive community support group out there! http://www.cesi.ie
You’re going to LOVE Maynooth! Congrats
Best Wishes. Hope all goes well.
Absolutely deadly news. Fair play. Class to hear of people doing well
Best of luck to you!
Fair play, hopefully it can celebrate with my father if i ever get into the college i want
Congrats, once you start I greatly recommend joining our table tennis club. Great craic.
Good man. But if you don’t like it don’t be afraid to speak up. Lots of people change their mind about courses and there’s a stigma around it that shouldn’t be there
Best of luck! Enjoy your time with your Dad!
G’luck
Cheers 🍻
Comhghairdeas leatsa 😊
Remind me! 4 years.
Congrats. I just finished CS year 1 and maybe to you itll seem obvious but I strongly advise you take the time to learn and understand *what* you are doing and *why* you are doing it. Take the time to practice and experiment with the programming, its a skill you need to continuously practice rather than just cram for last second before an exam. I saw a lot of people not do this and struggle really hard because of it. Remember the outcome of this is meant to be a job and a job isnt barely scraping through exams (which the LC conditions a lot of people to do..)
Otherwise, good luck and dont give up! It can be hard but it’s rewarding and a lot of fun.
Good on ye!
Keep a copy of every single project you make. Add them to your GitHub account once you learn how to use Git.
Do put some time in outside of class. The problems can be quite fun to solve if you challenge yourself.
Fair play to ya. The day I graduated university, after all the processions and celebrations, I ended up at a pub with my dad sharing some quality time together. Over one last pint for the night and he told me he loved me and was proud of me and that was the first time I ever saw him cry. It was a special moment in life I’ll always treasure. I’m happy for you.
System.out.println(“Hello World!”);
Try to keep on top of the computer science assignments, you’ll be doing java for the first year and probably have a 3 hr lab every week. Do not miss this under any circumstances. Part of continuous assessment and really useful.
Go to the lectures and copy down the code in class, a laptop is handy but hand written notes will do. Don’t take photos, unless you actually intend on copying down the code from them later.
Comment on your code.
For maths, just try to keep on top of it hahaha. The lectures are really fast paced, or at least I found them to be.
Don’t buy any of the reccomended textbooks from the website, they’re expensive and never used, all my lectures just gave out printouts of their own notes, thats all you need. There was one comp sci book written by the lecturer we were required to buy but it was 20 quid.
Don’t skip tutorials whatever you do, they are part of CA.
You will have tutorial sheets as homework. They can be deceiving. Try to manage you’re time well. They’re often due on a monday, best to chip away at them during the week rather than all on one night.
Pugin house on south campus does good food, nice soup.
I’m not sure what other modules you’re picking/ get to pick. Don’t do what I did and pick theoretical physics for the craic hahaha(unless you’re interested in it). CS and maths are intensive enough.
Use freshers week to your advantage, its a huge campus and can by daunting to find friends at first. Once you get comfortable in the labs you’ll be grand.
Find at least one mate that lives on campus.
Societies I’ve heard can be good craic, personally I didn’t have much time for them due to a long commute.
Good luck and enjoy.
Fantastic man. You’ll remember that pint as a beloved memory. Here’s to making many more with your dad. Congrats! 🙂
