  1. ‘Robbed’ – so the shoplifters used violence or a threat of violence immediately before or at the time of committing theft, and in order to do so?

Wish people would know the difference between theft, robbery and burglary – particularly journalists.

  2. Weird. You’d think with how well the economy was doing and the strong social safety net in place to help those rare few who don’t benefit from it, people wouldn’t have to resort to shoplifting. Oh well, better spend more money on Police.

  3. This will only get worse as government cuts on police and courts have a detrimental effect.
The only solution I see, as the courts do fuck all, harder prison sentencing for shoplifting or my favourite, fund social services appropriately, sort out junkies who steal for drug money.

  4. It’s about time we allow shopkeepers to keep firearms.

  5. The other day I picked up a bottle of whiskey from the shelf in Sainsbury’s. It was in a plastic box. An alarm immediately sounded, confusing the shit out of me, and a security bloke appears out of nowhere “are you going to buy that?”. “Yes, that’s why I took it from the shelf and put it in my basket”.

    Good times.

  6. They have been robbing people for YEARS. What goes around comes around.

  7. Retailers robbed? What about cost of living increase not matching the wage increase? The government has been robbing us all blind for a much bigger sum than £16m, collectively they rob us of billions every year. If you’re in the position where you need and can’t afford a sandwhich, then get yourself down to your local chain supermarket and help yourself. DO NOT go to a news agents or an independent business.

Drug addicts stealing for their addiction is a different issue and should be dealt with, and how to nip that in the bud is a whole different discussion.

But yeah, if you’re using violence or attacking or preying on vulnerable people then you’re a scumbag and deserve to have your freedoms taken away until you sort your shit out.

  8. UK need better laws for security not to be afraid to touch shoplifters including kids

  9. When I lived in London earlier this year I had to ask for tins of tuna because they were kept behind the till of my local Tesco extra due to the risk of theft. Tins of tuna. It’s basically Argos but for food

  10. Shoplifting epidemic in the same period supermarkets are seeing record breaking profits. And r/London thinks it’s down to criminals selling second hand beef down the pub?

  11. My local Sainsbury’s puts Tony’s Chocolonely in those hard plastic DVD cases. Shameless of them to keep these essentials from the desperate, well-meaning people who have no other choice than to steal chocolate…

  12. Why are there people defending shoplifters in this comment section 🤦‍♀️

  13. I’ve witnessed a Greggs theft. A ‘man’ walked in, filled his bag and left calmly. We all laughed and the staff in there just said they were told not to intervene. Seems to be accepted these days, sadly.

  14. There’s this ideological view that shoplifting shouldn’t be seen as a major issue, because people steal out of desperation from large immoral corporations, and to stop shoplifting we need to increase the welfare budget rather than policing.

This is totally out of touch of course – shoplifting in London today is largely done by professional criminals who will re-sell their loot for profit – but this view does play a part in how we got here.

  15. There’s been an influx of clothing from major brands on Vinted, still in plastic wrapping, unopened with tags. I’m curious if shoplifters are moving products on there as well. It’s higher quantities than just unwanted Christmas gifts!

  16. This is what happens when you decriminlise shoplifting

  17. And all that theft is going on higher prices for everyone else.

  18. A guy walked into cafe nero behind me yesterday, had his select choice of all the baked goods and sandwiches on the shelves. Proceeded to walk out without paying, arms soo full he had to push the door with his shoulder. I immediately told the baristas, they didn’t even stop making coffees… they’re clearly trained to not do anything.

  19. Of course, it has nothing to do with 14 years (15 now as Labour are carrying on this bs policy) of Austerity coupled with corporate greed. Nothing at all

  20. They save way more than this not having to employ cashiers, with self check out it makes shoplifting a lot easier. Supermarkets know this, but they still do it as it’s cost effective even adjusting for all the shop lifting.

  21. Starbucks made 500 million in revenue and paid 0 corporation tax.

  22. Bring in Singapore style punishments and watch this problem disappear. But that won’t happen because Brits are spineless.

  23. Who would have thought that having no law enforcement and no consequences would lead to this?

Perhaps if the mega corporations could pay their fair share of tax we’d have more money in the coffers to spend on public services such as the Police… of course we’d need a government that spends the money wisely and invests in a long term future rather than just short terminism with one eye on re-election and keeping power.

  24. And yet I bet for harmless looking people accidentally walking out with a cheap product the security will be ready to do their best Goldberg impression

  25. Reminds me of the Summer of Love when people fought against racism by looting sports wear and PlayStations. The claims of desperate, poverty stricken individuals stealing to survive doesn’t seem to pan out.

  26. You wouldn’t believe how much the wealthy are stealing each month

  27. Where are they getting this 16.7 million number from? There is no source or anything in the article to see how they came up with this number. The only thing that comes up on google is this article and a few others quoting this article. Seems a bit fishy.

Most retail loss is due to shrink, not shoplifting exclusively.

  28. Vicious cycle isn’t it. Put your prices up and move money offshore to prevent it being cycled back into the economy means less money for people and public services which means more crime and poverty. And on it goes
