The owner of Meekong Bar does not believe the incidents are connected, but are symptoms of broader issues in the neighborhood.
SEATTLE — Thieves smashed the window of a Belltown bar early Tuesday morning and wiped out its liquor shelves in the third attack on the business since late August.
“The alcohol is not really the issue. The issue was that my dad actually came in and these two guys stood here. [One] was yelling, ‘F you’ in Vietnamese,” said co-owner Hung Li.
“He’s an old dude with a cane,” he said of his dad.Â
The confrontation happened around 7 a.m. when Li’s father arrived to do prep work at Meekong Bar on 4th Avenue.
“That was the only reason they even stopped, that’s the concerning part,” said Li. “You know with [my dad’s] limited English, he just said, ‘No good, no good! Go!'”
Surveillance video revealed the burglary began around 2 a.m.
The footage, provided to KING 5 by Li, shows someone kicking the window in and stepping inside the business. They were joined by an accomplice, and eventually more people during the five-hour free-for-all.
Li estimates they took between $500 and $1,000 worth of alcohol.Â
In response to the theft, Li removed most of the remaining alcohol to prevent another theft.Â
According the Seattle Police Department (SPD), someone called 911 to report the broken window and broken bottles of alcohol outside. The caller did not see anyone in or around the area, police said.
SPD took reports of windows being broken at the business on Dec. 21 and Aug. 29, but neither incident resulted in anyone entering the business.
“It’s like a different world at night, that’s why we close early, at 8:30. People ask us why all the time. It’s for employee safety,” Li said.Â
He hopes the city installs more traffic cameras in the area to deter crime, he’d also like to see more patrols.
