  1. The city of Kadugli long served as a garrison town in a border state between Sudan and South Sudan. Despite three decades of war in the region, it never fell into rebel hands. That may be about to change, as two allied rebel groups, SPLM-North (which has historic ties to South Sudan’s government) and the Rapid Support Forces (which receives military assistance from the United Arab Emirates), have overrun the Sudanese military’s outer defenses north of Kadugli.
