18. From what I recall hearing about how the Russians dealt with the theatre ruins after they finally occupied Mariupol, the title is **literally** true. It’s not just that they are having a party on the site of a war crime involving the mass death of civilian adults and children so they are *figuratively* dancing on graves.

    What I remember reading is that the Ukrainians removed the bodies they could reach from the ruins of the theatre, but their efforts were limited because the city was under constant, active attack by the Russians. When the Russians did take control, they cleared out some of the rubble and the human remains their excavations revealed, but fairly quickly someone decided this didn’t look good or cost too much or was delaying things, so they left a bunch of rubble in the basement and simply pumped concrete in until they had a level floor. It’s unknown how many Ukrainians died in Mariupol and what the casualties were at the theatre, but it is certain there’s a mass grave of some size below the dance floor shown in the video.

    Trying to think of parallels, and it seems to me that this is not just the equivalent of building a night club on the site of a barracks at Auschwitz extermination camp; its like building a club on the site of a pit where the ashes from Auschwitz’s crematoria were dumped. What makes it even more depraved is that those who ordered and committed war crimes in Mariupol are able to dance on these graves. (Well, *theoretically,* anyway. I’d like to believe that everyone directly involved in those atrocities has since met a grisly and painful end.)
