  1. It died in 2000, with reality TV crap. MTV had Headbangers Ball in the 80s early 90s, and nu metal was huge in the late 90s getting airtime.

  2. Haven’t watched it in years but in the foxtel days I spent countless hours over the years flicking through the music channels, mtv was mostly reality by then but already

  3. Any time I scroll past it ALWAYS has old episodes of Catfish on or else it’s an ad break.

  4. In the 90s, as a teenager, I recall being bummed that everyone was sort of force fed the same media.  Nevertheless, if you were an artsy music lover, MTV was the call.  120 minutes, Yo! mtv Raps and headbangers ball debuted and rotated really cool shit.  I’d have guessed at the time that the internet would improve on the formula for the betterment of us all.  But now I miss it so much.  The common reference points and all that entails.  Sitting through Sweet Potato Pie to get to Sober and vice versa I think helped bridge cultures. Algorithms divide and conquer.

Anyway, happy new year from New Zealand.

  5. 120 Mins

    Beavis and Butt Head

    Unplugged

    Celebrity Death Match

    >>>

    Cribs

    Pimp my Ride

Not hard to see what went wrong really

  6. Mtv also deleted over 30 years of shows and old recordings, priceless things lost unless someone used a vcr

  7. They’re crazy to not capitalize off the nostalgia that revamping their old content could create. They used to have whole award shows we cared about man.

Go back to showing contemporary music videos nonstop so people can stream it like MTV dj. We all stuck with streaming now, cross platform with spotifiy etc. Bring back MTV news, stream as a pod. They’re so stuck in the past and in such a bad way, MTV used to set the bar for pop culture and coolness.

They could shake up and modernize the old shows even, nobody wants to watch 30 yr old millionaire teen moms throw temu Kardashian birthday parties. Who is stopping them from making Teen Dad or True Life 2026 Im A Nonbinary Person/ Underage Social Media Influencer/ etc? This is the network that brought us Jackass and The Osbournes and 16 and Pregnant and Pimp My Ride. They used to push boundaries but now they’re just so out of touch with modern pop culture.

  8. Astounds me how fucking wrong people are getting this. The music channels have closed down. The MTV channel with all the reality shit is still going on. That’s the channel that hasn’t shown music on it in years. The channels that have shut down have always shown music.

  9. Bullshit headline as these particular music only channels came after the original and have always been less popular.

  10. Clickbait headline, the main MTV channel is going nowhere.

  11. Wonder what this means for The State, and other shows they vaulted.

  12. Thats a shame. The spinoff music channels were the only ones worth watching at this point. MtV Jams was the best. Sad to see what the main channel has turned into.

  13. In the late 90s and early 00s I was switching between MTV and a channel we had in the UK called The Box – where you call or text a code to the channel and it plays that music video. It was sort of a “on-demand” ish music video channel. Was this available in the States or anywhere else outside of the UK too?

  14. Last time I even turned on MTV was when Rob and Big(rip) were still on.

  15. MTV was by far the most influential media platform of the 80s & 90s, I’m just glad I got to experience it

  16. Go quietly into that sweet blue yonder….until we meet again Kurt Loader… It was fun Tabitha Sorren. I’ll miss you Carson Daily…

  17. So sad. I love MTV Classics, which was nonstop 24/7 videos. The only option for me at this point is Vevo on Pluto TV, with channels for 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s music videos.

  18. Well, if rock and roll taught me anything, you shouldn’t trust anyone over thirty

  19. NO IT ISN’T! Why is fucking EVERYONE disingenuously reporting this? The only channels that are shutting down are some of the music only channels in
Europe, none of which were created 44 years ago. MTV US, MTV HD (UK main channel), MTV Asia, MTV Japan, and many others are not shutting down.

  20. Ehhh I think it was dead when literally all that was on was 24/7 ridiculousness…

  21. Just to clarify, since I saw people posting about this a few months ago when they announced shutting down and seemed confused.

The regular channel MTV is not going away (I mean, it probably eventually will but). The channels that are shutting down now are the MTV music-focused channels that were in Europe (MTV Music in UK, MTV 90s, etc.)

  22. We’ve been doing this for months. This refers to a 24/7 music-only channel that I don’t think even airs in America.

  23. Memories of watching Woodstock ‘99 disaster in real time! 💩

  24. If they focused on what made them great and not deciding to just air Ridiculousness reruns for 12 hours a day maybe there wouldn’t be in this spot.

MTV really lost the plot, and could easily regain it; music remains as relevant as ever, but as always the suits upstairs will make a shit decision because money.

  25. I was there for its broadcast premiere and loved how it rocked the music industry. It was new and exciting until reality TV BS filled the air. Now it’s another junk channel. Good riddance from stink of recent years!

  26. Sad. It was revolutionary for culture back in 80s and 90s.

  27. All they play is ridiculousness. They had a period of great original content and music. Seems like they could just hit the nostalgia train or produce some new shows.

  28. It’s been on life support for a long time, it’s about time it was put out of its misery

  29. One aspect of channels like MTV (and MuchMusic in Canada) is that everyone knew all the hits, even for songs you didn’t even like. I’m a rock fan, but I can still sing along with Lionel Ritchie and Pat Benatar, Madonna, Whitney Houston etc.

Now days I have no idea what is even a hit anymore. Taylor Swift is a the biggest music star in the world and I can barely name a single song.

It’s not my age. I’m still in touch with music. But nowadays everyone curates their own playlist. There isn’t a shared playlist anymore.
