Greece Offers to Make a Trade With Britain for the Parthenon Marbles

  1. Sure, trade the Elgin marbles for one of the other pantheon slabs.

    > The PM told The Daily Telegraph that he would be willing to **loan** the British Museum some of Greece’s cultural artifacts in an effort to make a deal to return the Marbles more agreeable to them.

Nah, this is where he lost me.

  2. It would be easy for a savvy politician to accomplish this goal. All you would have to do is stop saying they were “stolen” and recognize the legitimate argument that they were “saved”. This would not be in conflict with saying that they belong in Greece today, as a priceless part of Greek cultural heritage.

You can either have your butthurt talking points, or you can have your artifacts back, not both.

  3. Are the Parthenon Marbles really that important to Greece?

If the crown jewels were “stolen” in a similar way, I can’t say that I would want them back. It would literally be a part of history and their acquisition would be a part of the story to be told.

Also they wouldn’t exactly taken by aggressive means. It is not like we had a war, plundered your lands and took it.

The only thing I can think of that I would want back if stolen, is something like Big Ben because it literally represents Britain and it’s culture today. People do feel some sort of attachment to it.

Do Greek people really feel attachment to the Parthenon Marbles or are they just told to?

  4. Brexit means brexit. If England chooses not to be part of the EU, then England must return EU cultural artifacts.

  5. Comment section is comically trash, ranging from “finders keepers” to “make a deal then break it” (very popular mindset these days), with on the other hand of the argument people rightfully saying that the marbles are a significant part of culture and history, and not just a pretty sight you see once and forget.

How the offending party can look at themselves and think “yep, we’re the good guys and in the right here” is beyond me.

In before “but we saved them!!!”. Yeah congrats. Saved, past tense.
