Genuine question to those with more info, as I’ve never noticed a movie or anything similar tied in to the event in previous years?

I’ve researched that the film was a US/UK collaboration, though that is not anything particularly special for a film as US/UK film collaborations are common. The musical is a US property, Gregory Maguire the author is a US citizen, and L Frank Baum was a US writer for the Wizard of Oz.

Why it was featured in the UK new years celebration is curious to me, and probably why to me it felt more like an ad?

  1. it was filmed in elstree (outside london) and a large majority of crew were british. i know a lot of backing dancers who were born here

  2. Listen if they paid for them and saved taxpayers money … crack on

  3. No idea, but was the EU flag, 3 minutes in, an advertisement or not, eh?

  4. I’m sorry but this was one of the worst new years from a television point of view…. No count down nothing just a bit of crap music and repeats after of course by the BBC….

  5. I’ve no interest in the films but Wicked is really one of the biggest successes of film marketing in recent years. I worked a children’s charity event which was full of the branding and standees.

  6. The ‘special effects’ were not only pointless but detracted from the fireworks. I guess the drone years are over then.

  7. It was about 30 seconds of a 12-ish minute display recognising a major film event of the year, I think people are overreacting

  8. Not knowing much about the movie, I thought it was a tribute to Grotbags.

  9. What the fuck is this embarrassing shite? Fuck me.

  10. Is this celebrating 2026?? Looks like its from 2006!

To be honest i have a soft spot for this video quality.

  11. Ah that’s from the BBC coverage, of course. If you want to watch the New Year celebrations in London undisturbed by some div wearing sandals made out of Weetabix showing something (a pet film etc) those actually attending the display on the river did not have to suffer then watch Sky News. Simples. BBC did the same lame thing last year too.

  12. UK is soo dystopian. The firework show/ display gets worse and worse by the year, ads show up, music is shit, and now people have to pay to watch in person and on top of that now denying access to parks and places with good altitude visibility to the “show”

  13. This is an anti-ad. Fuck whoever at the BBC came up with this.

  14. The promo funded the fireworks. That’s how it goes these days unfortunately

  15. Well ADs help pay for all this crap they are launching in the air. Waste of money literally going up in smoke.

  16. I suppose it helps pay for the fireworks but seems like a slippery slope, I was more annoyed they didn’t play any Oasis!

  17. It’s a cheesy ad , I suppose it’s going to be like this from now on

  18. Wait, they closed park vantage points to stop people seeing this for free but showed it on the tele anyway? Logic….

  19. NGL London is one of the worst cities to celebrate new years
