Police said they could not immediately be more precise about how many people had been killed in the blaze.

New Year’s eve celebrations turned tragic in Switzerland‘s Crans Montana when at least 40 people were killed and over 100 others injured, most of them seriously, after a blast ripped through a luxury bar triggering a massive fire.

Swiss authorities said the blast, which happened at the basement of the Le Constellation Bar and Lounge in the ski resort town of Crans-Montana, was being considered a fire and not a terror attack. More than 150 people were in the bar at the time of the explosion, an India Today report said.

Two French women who said they were in the bar told France’s BFM TV that they saw the fire start in the basement section of the club after a bottle containing “birthday candles” was held up too close to the wooden ceiling, a Reuters report said.

Beatrice Pilloud, attorney general of the Valais Canton, said it was too early to determine the fire’s cause but added that investigators have ruled out an attack, Al Jazeera reported.

Police said they could not immediately be more precise about how many people had been killed in the blaze. However, the Italian foreign ministry said in a statement that Swiss ‍police believe about 40 people have died.

The resort is popular with tourists. Some of the ‍victims are from other countries, said Stephane Ganzer, head of security for the Valais Canton, the Al Jazeera report said.
