I foresee a lot more burglars will have accidents now
imagine unironically being a neoliberal
The fact that this was ever a thing is actually mind boggling; a “duty of care” of someone who is actively trying to harm you and yours in your in own home. Nauseating stuff.
Own a musket for home defense, since that’s what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. “What the devil?” As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he’s dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it’s smoothbore and nails the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, “Tally ho lads” the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.
Nice. Now all we need is a law that allows us to defend our home, family and property with force, without worrying about ending up in court. The duty to retreat shite is disgraceful in a home invasion situation.
I suppose for them, it’s a work environment.
So with less claims will premiums come down? Will they fuck.
Time to start that online business selling bear traps
You break into my house (first of all congratulations cause there’s 2 doors to every entrance or triple glazed windows), I am running to where I keep my baseball bat that my cousins gifted me and then ima start swinging. Whatever happens after that depends on how fast you can get the fuck out of here.
As opposed to the US, where cops will advise you, as an aside, if you shoot and kill someone trying to get into your house, pull the body at least partially over the threshold so it gives the appearance they actually got in.
If you find a burglar injured in your house you are better off to beat him to death because there isnt a jury in the land that will convict you if you plead self defence. But if you leave him alive to sue you and that case will only be heard by some bollox of judge who has more sympathy on the burglar because he sees him every week in the court and he probably paid for his mansion thanks to legal fees paid by the taxpayer in hundreds of cases of lads like that. So you’ll end up with the bollox of a judge ordering you to pay the burglar massive compo for the pain he suffered while attempting to rob you.
So in a strange way this change of the law of good for the homeowner and for the burglar.
It is absurd that the law was allowed to develop in such a plainly unfair and perverse manner. About fucking time. Irish judges are an absolute bunch of clowns when it involves anything around personal injury claims.
Wait that was real, I thought it was an urban legend
Finally a practical use for my home alone traps
This is good to see. That being said, to be fair, regardless of what the law is, if someone breaks into my home I will do my best to incapacitate them even if that means killing them. It might sound extreme but in my honest opinion the moment you step your foot over that door and into the house your life is forfeit, especially if you get anywhere near a bedroom.
This is only happening because businesses want to make it harder for personal injuries claimants to take legal action against them and burglary is a good cover, it’s the right thing to do but would never have happened unless businesses wanted something.
So if you break in to my house, get injured, you can now sue me in the courts for money? Is this what the law is?
Apart from a few isolated incidents was this a huge problem?
Seems to be another way to point to payouts as the reason premiums are so high and not the cartel Irish insurance companies are running.
this is one and probably only one area where i agree with the united state’s way of doing things.
If someone comes into my house im so fucking liable.
I can still climb the outside of a luas for compo though?
I can only see the first bit of the article.
Does this also affect the ability of people legitimately hurt to file suit? That’s what the first few sentences seem to indicate?
This country is actually so retarded at times.
Does this mean we can stick glass shards onto the top of our garden walls again?? /s
About fucking time!
ffs, a person can’t do an honest day’s burglary without having insurance protection. What’s the world coming to?
A special kind of punishment should be allowed for burglars. Scum invading someones home should be severely punished.

Punishment – Misery-style!
