The Viruthampattu police arrested two migrant workers near Katpadi in Vellore on Thursday for reportedly damaging an ATM machine of a private bank in an attempt to steal cash.
The police identified the arrested as S. Balram, 26, of Uttar Pradesh and G. Dharmendra, 25, of Delhi. They had been working odd jobs in the area until a fortnight ago. Initial inquiry revealed that after they stopped working, the duo had been frequenting the Chittoor-Katpadi-Arakkonam-Chennai rail route. The police said that on December 29, they attempted to break the locker of the ATM machine in Viruthampattu village but failed.
When the bank officials alerted the police after seeing the closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage of the incident. The police analysed the footage and nabbed the suspects. They seized mobile phones, welding machines, and fake ATM cards from them. A case was registered. Balram and Dharmendra were lodged at the Central Prison in Vellore. A probe is under way.
