Take the Brexit bus: Brits living in Spain no longer allowed to drive after deal collapses

  1. Love these headlines. Makes it sound like brits would be banned from driving when in truth it only effects the lazy ones that couldn’t be bothered to change to a Spanish one….

  2. >An angry Ian Duncan Smith, the former Conservative leader and Tory MP, EU authorities simply refused to cooperate.
    >
    >Duncan Smith told the Daily Mail newspaper: “It’s a case of ‘mañana, mañana [‘tomorrow, tomorrow’]. It’s time they pull their finger out and do what they agreed.”

No one yet tell Ian Dunked-in-Shite any UK-Spain bilateral deal is done between UK and Spanish authorities?

  3. Bit more balanced article about this on iNews (https://inews.co.uk/news/world/britons-spain-face-life-family-care-post-brexit-talks-1621413), in summary:

    > Thousands of British expatriates in Spain who did not convert their UK driving licences to Spanish versions are not allowed to drive because an extension to allow British residents to use their UK licences has expired. This does not affect tourists or hauliers.

    > UK residents in Spain had until December 2020 to switch to a Spanish licence but Mr and Mrs Minnett missed the deadline. Both had to pass a Spanish driving test which has a theory and practical part which many British drivers find difficult due to language issues.

And of course a comment from one genius:

    > Shaun Minnett voted for Brexit but after moving to start a new life in Spain he regrets supporting Britain’s exit from Europe.

    > Now he finds that after 40 years of driving on the British roads, he is unable to get behind the wheel in his adopted country because of one of the direct consequences of Brexit.

From my interview today on u/GMB:
We knew exactly what we were voting for. It is insulting to say that 17.4million people were
too stupid to know what out would look like.

  5. The UK works the same way. I’ll be moving there soon and will have a year to convert my South African licence to a UK licence, if I don’t then I’ll have to retake my driver’s in the UK.

  6. Well Mr Duncan-Smith, this is the will of the people. You voted for it, you won, you fucked it up. Get over it!

  7. Do you literally have to *exchange* your UK licence for a Spanish one?

Is there any reason you can’t have both? Provided you have the required licence to drive in Spain, why would Spain give a shit that you also have a different licence that allows you to drive in the UK?

  8. If you move to another country; learn the language, pass the local driving test, get local qualifications. I’ve never understood why emigrant Brits think they’e an exception when they say the same thing about immigrants to the UK.
