Van (from Co. Cork) almost wipes cyclist out while overtaking

  1. I don’t know if cycling inside the yellow lines is legal but I’m doing it anyway as a cyclist. Not a chance in hell am I risking my life like the guy in the video above. I know the van should have waited before overtaking the cyclist but I know from personal experience that a lot of drivers are impatient and will risk a tight overtake rather than wait for the right time to overtake safely.

  2. The van should imagine that it is a tractor in front of them and then do whatever they would in that scenario, which is wait until they can pull into the opposing lane to pass.

person in big vehicle in front going slow : everybody waiting for chance to pass

person in small vehicle in front going slow: everybody losing their minds

    Edit:

found the location after some mentioned the road name, [here](https://www.google.com/maps/@51.845471,-8.403315,3a,42.1y,120.67h,82.58t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sFlLuY-mvKFIi5Fu1ZdzPuw!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)

  3. The more videos like this that I see the more I am amazed that anyone goes cycling on Irish roads.

  4. everyone hates it but sometimes youre better off taking the lane and never giving anyone the chance to overtake cos cunts like that think they can “squeeze past” if you stay left

  5. Looks like Carrs Hill in Cork. The main road to/from the port of Cork in Ringaskiddy where a huge amount of pharmaceuticals are located. It’s a shite two lane small road full of huge vehicles going too and from the port all day.

That road is currently being replaced by a full on motorway such is the level of road use there.

Say what you want about the van driver/cyclist but in my opinion you are absolutely mental cycling there regardless of right/wrong. It’s a dangerous road for cars not to mind bikes. Madness.

  6. Reading through threads like this just reinforces the fact that we’re literally decades behind most of Europe when it comes to attitudes around driving and cycling.

There’s briefly about half a metre width of muddy hard shoulder that quickly disappears back to grass, how the fuck can people seriously think the cyclist has any blame here?

Even if there was a consistent hard shoulder cycling in it would only encourage more people to fly past at full speed without giving any clearance

  7. I cycle frequently in Dublin, most weekends head up into the mountains. I love it, changed my life tbh.

My son was selected for several underage Irish basketball team. Since cork is a stronghold for basketball, which is clearly a minority sport, many training sessions for the national team are in cork. Grand, I drive him down and since he will be there for a few hours I throw my bike in the car and figure i will head our to the old head of kinsale, plenty of time to get there and back while he does his training sessions.

I did this once. I did not reach my intended destination. Those roads are insane, I turned around after 30 minutes and it was a scary experience. The speed of close passes was just unbelievable. I was down there for training so many times, attempted cycling once, no way would i do it again.

I cycle 15km return trip to Dublin City Centre as my exclusive commuting method, 5 days a week for 20 years, less frequently since covid and blended working. Most weekends I do 60- 100 km return trips over the mountains. Cork is too scary to contemplate.

  8. This is one of those times where I’m very happy for this human to lose their job and have a court date in the near future. Absolute recklessness, they shouldn’t be behind the wheel of a vehicle for years.

  9. As a car driver, honestly some of the worst most aggro bullshit driving I’ve ever seen, is from van drivers. I’ve had more run ins (as in road rage issues) with them than any other car type in existence. Literally only last week, had one dickhead in a construction van, overtake me ON A ROUNDABOUT. I was turning left and he went into the right lane and flew past me and took the first left too. Then proceeded to drive about 2 ft behind the jeep in front of him and dangerously tried to intimidate him to go faster, before trying to overtake them and couldn’t because we hit some traffic. Also cherry on top is Hocking a giant load of phlegm out his window onto the road. Absolutely charming guy. I wish I had my cam working but I haven’t plugged it back in yet after a crash a few months back. But I would have loving to catch all this on tape and send it to the company who’s van it was. They’re fucking headcases on the road. I treat bikes like this as if they were any other vehicle on the road. Drive behind it until it’s safe enough to overtake.

  10. Fuck sake lads. On my commute to work this morning, there was a cyclist taken out on the Rock road. Is it really worth it to arrive a few seconds faster, going through another human being?

  11. Nothing wrong with this. That driver was clearly held back for a frustrating two seconds which is more than adequate rationale to put someone’s life at risk. Also he was driving a bigger vehicle which means he is more important.

Also, also someone needs to teach these cyclists a lesson. They don’t pay ‘road tax’. Just who do they think they are using Irish roads? We should run them all over – after all the worst penalty we will face is a couple of years driving ban, while the filthy cyclist will be dead. We win overall. Also didn’t God say to Noah that no cyclists should be on the Ark before he committed genocide? Pretty sure that’s in the Bible somewhere.
