Whats the things with those TV shopping cannals in germany? I always enjoy them because they look like a fever dream.

There are several similiar channels with similiar tv shopping shows – they sell amazing products which can change your life, they talk about those products with an exagerrated excitation, the TEMU-like items cost a lot of money and there is often the timer showing how many of items are left – and it is always running like hell, no matter what time or day is it.

Is anyone really buying those products? Or is it some high class scam or even money laundering?

  1. Teleshopping was very common in many countries in the television era, it’s really bizarre, it works similar to gameshows where a FOMO is induced and (usually) pensioners get tricked into buying something they don’t need.

  2. I don’t think this is unique to Germany? Some of these channels have/had dubbed American content, complete with the requisite manic overacting.

I wouldn’t be surprised if most customers had issues with shopping addiction and hoarding disorders.

  3. I enjoyed watching those as a kid. The people who buy that stuff are very old people who get scammed easily or have a shopping addiction in general

Both. These businesses are definitely shady as hell and their main target are usually elderly people who are easy to fool. I didn’t believe that anyone actually bought any of this stuff either but then I found out a few years ago that my great aunt regularly watches these channels and buys nearly EVERYTHING to the point where her house is full of this cheap stuff and she can’t even use it. I’m pretty sure she just buys it out of boredom and that’s exactly who these channels aim at.

  5. Their target audience are elderly people who are more likely to fall for those shoddy offers. With our currently overaged society there’s plenty of old folks to take advantage of.

  6. That’s classic American-style teleshopping.

They do sell some stuff, although not as much as some time ago. After all, Germany is a big retirement home with a very high amount of people over 60.

  7. Yes, they are a fever dream.

Yes, older women / mothers tend to order that shit. Sadly.

  8. Just this morning iw watched oats studios “cooling woth bill” hrhr

  9. Teleshopping. Shady business aming at the elderly. There’s a South Park episode about it

  10. I thought the joke here was the product name: „Insta Schwamm“ meaning „Insta sponge“, which is exactly what my son calls his mom (literally with these German words) when she scrolls through Instagram 🙂
