George Clooney has responded to President Donald Trump cheering about the actor’s decision to leave the United States with his family and live in France.

The “Ocean’s Eleven” actor and his wife, Amal Clooney, were recently granted French citizenship alongside their 8-year-old twins, Alexander and Ella, according to government documents viewed by USA TODAY.

“Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Dec. 31. “Clooney got more publicity for politics than he did for his very few, and totally mediocre, movies.”

Trump added that Clooney was never a movie star but rather an “average guy who complained, constantly, about common sense in politics. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

“I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November,” Clooney said in a statement provided to USA TODAY and first shared by The Hollywood Reporter on Jan. 1.

USA TODAY has reached out to the White House for comment.

The Oscar winner explained that the decision to move to France was so his kids could grow up outside Hollywood and live an everyday life out of the public eye.

“We live on a farm in France,” he said in an October profile for Esquire. “A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid I hated the whole idea of it. But now, for them, it’s like – they’re not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

He added, “I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood. I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life. France – they kind of don’t give a s— about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”

George Clooney previously said ‘I don’t care’ about Trump’s comments

George Clooney is used to brushing off insults from the president.

In an April 21 appearance on “CBS Mornings,” the “Good Night, and Good Luck” actor responded to Trump calling him a “second-rate movie ‘star’ and failed political pundit” after a “60 Minutes” segment where Clooney discussed the importance of freedom of the press.

“I don’t care,” Clooney told CBS of Trump’s comments about him. “I’ve known Donald Trump for a long time. My job is not to please the president of the United States. My job is to try to tell the truth when I can and when I have the opportunity.”

He added, “I’m well aware of the idea that people will not like that. There will be people who criticize that. Elon Musk has weighed in every once in a while. That’s their right do it, and it’s my right to say the other side.”

Trump bashed “60 Minutes” for its “puff piece” on Clooney in a Truth Social post on March 23. The president said Clooney “dumped” former President Joe Biden “like a dog” after the actor called for Democrats to replace Biden as their nominee in the 2024 presidential election in an op-ed in The New York Times.
