The priorities of the Cyprus EU Presidency as regards migration were discussed at a meeting in Vienna between Deputy Minister for Migration Nicholas Ioannides, Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Finnish Interior Minister Mari Rantanen.
The meeting in Vienna was held at the invitation of the Austrian Minister, Ioannides posted on X.
The discussion, he said, was held in an excellent atmosphere and they discussed the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU on migration, the need for strict controls at the EU’s external borders and the need for more repatriations of illegal migrants.
“We begin the Presidency of the Council of the EU with the strong conviction that we will contribute to the promotion of the EU’s objectives, but also to the consolidation of the Republic of Cyprus as a pillar of security and stability”, he posted on X.
Cyprus, an EU member since 2004, assumed its second EU Presidency January 1st.
