Lithuania is ordering even more RBS-70 Bolide anti-aircraft missiles from Swedish company Saab for €320 million. This should meet air defense unit needs through 2026-2032.

This contract is part of the overall framework agreement for purchasing the latest generation RBS 70 NG air defense systems. The agreement was signed between Lithuania’s Ministry of Defense and Sweden’s Defense Materiel Administration.

So we’re looking at ammunition procurement to ensure functioning protection of Lithuanian skies. This is especially relevant considering these are short-range systems actively used not only against aircraft but also helicopters, cruise missiles, and drones.

As a reminder, Lithuania has been ordering new RBS 70 NG air defense systems for over a year, with the third battery purchased only in early December 2025. This specifically concerns the mobile MSHORAD variant to be integrated on JLTV armored vehicles.

Overall, such a system includes a launch module, Giraffe 1X radar station, plus GBAD C2 command and control system. However, the exact composition within these contracts is not disclosed.

Worth remembering: Lithuanian military has used RBS 70 since 2004 meaning over 20 years of experience. New missiles may also go to older systems.

Lithuania also transferred RBS 70 air defense systems to Ukraine as military aid, where they underwent combat testing. Among their downed targets are even russian Ka-52 helicopters.

As a reminder, Lithuania doesn’t forget other air defense systems like NASAMS, for which missile deliveries will take quite a while. As for RBS 70, they may be produced in Ukraine as part of Saab’s initiative.
