Emergency crews responded to the Mayfair Shopping Centre food court after bear spray was used Friday afternoon.

VicPD says its officers were called around 2 p.m. for reports that the bear spray was discharged in the busy food court.

Many people were affected by the spray, including adults and young children.

Officers believe two youth fired the bear spray, and were targeting another group of youth, however, the suspects have not yet been located.

VicPD, Victoria Fire, and BC Emergency Health Services responded.

“BC Emergency Health Services received a call at 2:10 pm today regarding a person in need of medical care on the 3100 block of Douglas Street in Victoria,” paramedic public information officer Brian Twaites said in an email, noting one ambulance responded.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient who was transported to hospital in stable condition.”

VicPD says officers are continuing the investigation and working to identify the suspects.
