Croatia’s new Energy Efficiency Act has officially come into force, introducing stricter obligations for public authorities and companies to cut energy consumption by 2030 and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The legislation aligns Croatia with wider European Union objectives aimed at regulating energy use across all member states. The EU argues that improved energy efficiency will lower overall consumption and costs, strengthen energy security, and gradually phase out reliance on carbon-based fuels.

As part of these commitments, binding national energy consumption caps have been set. For Croatia, the maximum allowed energy consumption by 2030 is equivalent to 5.88 million tonnes of oil.
