I am unsure that this is worth saying, but *Private Eye* has had a lot of stuff on this dispute over the years. (The reason it may not be worth saying is: *Private Eye* readers will know that fact, and others are unlikely to start ordering back issues; *Private Eye* has no electronic version.)
Perhaps the persecution owes to Martyn Percy being on the progressive wing (or what would regard itself as such) of the Church of England.
