The former Bulgarian national football coach Dimitar Penev is dead. According to the Bulgarian Football Association, he died on Saturday at the age of 80 after a long illness.

As coach, Penev sensationally led Bulgaria to the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup in the USA. He was considered one of his country’s best-known football personalities and was named the best Bulgarian coach of the 20th century. As a player, Penev took part in the 1966, 1970 and 1974 World Cups.
