Though it should be noted that a grand coalition with Salvini and Berlusconi – assuming he gets to live or stay relevant for that long, his underlings are already stabbing each other over the scraps of his party – is somewhat unlikely.
Salvini is also a slightly different brand of fascist and many of his policies (NATO, EU, centralisation vs devolution, the economy) clash with Meloni’s; he’s also vying with her for the same voter base and is very much not in his heyday anymore, at least compared to the numbers he got back in 2018. But anything is possible in this timeline!
The major issue with the possibility of the far right leading is the following: they will ruin Italy forever.
Lega and Fratelli d’Italia are the true bastard ones (fascist fanbase, racist, homophobic, strongly bigots, they want to turn Italy into the Bible Belt and detach from Europe)
Forza Italia (even though they are still right wing) could be a little better (they are pro-Europe, not so extreme in ideology) but… their leader is Silvio Bunga Berlusconi, a guy who has been running from the law for a while.
Many say that the left wing or alternative parties would be better…but I’m not quite sure on it (too many internal rifts, never agree together on stuff, Putin supporters hidden in the party members…).
This should cause fear in everyone, not just the EU, including Italians. The far-right is incapable of proper policy, they’re only capable of kleptocracy and identity politics. They’re scammers and grifters.
Finally some good fuckin news
I thought Mario Draghi was extreamly popular in Italy and had his far right nuts under control?!
Is Salvini going to wear his Putin T-Shirt with “Russian Army” on it during the campaign? 😀
Country that birthed fascism somehow really still loves fascism.
The usual reaction will be „eh, that’s Italy. They are cute but sometimes silly. What can you do?“ – and ignore it.
Is a lot of Europe still longing for the days of far right nationalism? This story seems to appear year after year.
Are they far right, or are they Reddit far right? You know, right of Stalin?
Europe don’t worry, it’s a internal war of far-right member who are waiting for the last day of Mr B. when this moment happen, only one of the two in photo remain on far right command, but without enought vote for Chigi’s palace
The combined Lega + FdI appear to have had around 40% in polling since 2019. If anything, according to the polling this might be one of the first times that them + M5S barely have over 50% (very close though).
Still, quite terrifying. Italy is by far the most likely to leave the EU in the next 10 years
Western Europeans: “eww Eastern Europe is full of far right populists! So barbaric, unlike us 😏”
*Meanwhile Western Europe:* AfD in Eastern Germany, Le Pen in France, Vox in Spain, Brexit in the UK, whatever the hell is happening in Italy
