The Government of Malta is calling for the de-escalation, stability and a peaceful and democratic solution in Venezuela, following the situation in the country.

In a lightning military strike, the U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, and spirited them out of the country to face justice in the United States on Saturday. President Donald Trump says the U.S. is “going to run” Venezuela until a transition of power can take place, but it’s not clear what that will mean on the ground in the South American country.

A spokesperson for the Maltese Government said that the government is “following the situation in Venezuela and remains in close contact with our European Union partners to monitor developments.”

“Under all circumstances, respect for international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter is essential. We continue to call for de-escalation, stability and a peaceful and democratic solution.”
