At the Estonian border checkpoint Koidula, all improperly parked cars were evacuated, which cluttered the forest area and the official parking lot.
“The evacuation work began in October. During this time, almost 50 cars were taken out, which, according to the Transport Department, significantly improved the situation. The evacuated vehicles were delivered by agreement to a guarded parking lot in the city of Vyru,” the Current Camera reports.
The head of the department’s supervision department, Siim Yaksi, said that the evacuation led to scandals.
“Imagine: you arrive from Russia, reach the parking lot and find that there is no car. This fear, panic or uncertainty unbalances, and a person starts looking for where the car might be — he goes to the police, to the Transport Department. In the case of our contractual partner, I think he has already been “rewarded” with strong words and sent to all sorts of “beautiful places”,” Siim Yaksi said.
He noted that the owners of cars are mostly Russian-speaking residents of Latvia, Finland and Estonia.
“The owners have already arrived for more than ten cars, but about ten cars remain in the guarded parking lot, for which no one has come. The agency decided to put eight of them up for public auction to cover the costs of evacuation and storage,”ERR reports.
According to him, it was planned to spend 30 thousand euros on evacuation, but 5 thousand euros turned out to be enough.
The Transport Department is not going to create additional parking spaces at the Koidula border checkpoint, and those who cross the border are advised to use the paid parking located nearby.
