Madison restaurant owner and Venezuelan immigrant says Maduro news brings relief

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – News involving Venezuela’s longtime leader Nicolás Maduro is prompting strong reactions among Venezuelans living in the United States, including one Madison restaurant owner who says the moment brings relief after decades of watching his home country change.

Jeykell Badell, the owner of La Taguara Restaurants in Madison, says what’s happening now is deeply personal. He left Venezuela years ago and says his reaction reflects his lived experience growing up amid political and economic turmoil.

“Venezuela? I think it’s the most beautiful country in the world,” Badell said. “We are so receptive, fun, amazing. I mean, you go there and you go to a family, and you can be in the next five seconds you’re sitting on a table eating, having fun and laughing.”

Badell says he first came to the United States in 1999 to study English, around the time Hugo Chávez rose to power in Venezuela. Over the years, he says, conditions worsened and he ultimately decided to stay in the U.S.

“Politics, mainly politics,” Badell said. “You know, having a democratic country, turning the wheel to the extreme left, confiscating things, closing things, and it was rough.”

Following the latest developments involving Maduro, Badell says many Venezuelans feel relief — a sentiment he believes is widely shared among those who left the country.

“And I want people to know that we were okay with taking down the dictatorship, Maduro,” Badell said. “Because if you interview any Venezuelan, they’ll be okay with that. We have been suffering for 26 years of this.”

Badell emphasized that his views are his own and not meant as a political statement in the United States. He said he was cautious about what he shared publicly, especially online.

“I was very, very, very cautious about what we posted on Facebook,” he said. “What I posted was as a Venezuelan. It was not as a business owner.”

He also says there is widespread misunderstanding about what life has been like in Venezuela, particularly among people who have never experienced it firsthand.

“The misconception here is a lot of people doesn’t know what was happening down there,” Badell said. “I guarantee that a lot of people don’t know where Venezuela is located.”

Badell says millions of Venezuelans have left the country over the past two decades, some because of economic conditions and others because they feared persecution. While he says many Venezuelans are celebrating recent developments, he believes fear still lingers.

“Everybody’s happy. Everybody is celebrating,” he said. “They haven’t gone to the streets because they’re still afraid.”

Badell says he does not consider Maduro to be Venezuela’s president — a view he describes as his personal opinion — and hopes for a transition that leads to stability and freedom. He also acknowledged the situation remains fluid, with negotiations still underway.

He says his hope is simple.

“Looking forward for the best outcome for Venezuela,” Badell said. “That’s all what we’re looking for.”

Badell also encouraged people to learn more about Venezuela’s history and recent events before reacting online. He said misinformation and distance from the crisis can shape how people perceive what his community has experienced.

“There are so many tools right now,” he said. “Before you say something, you know, find out what’s happening in reality. Talk to Venezuelan friends. Go to Venezuelan forums on Facebook and see in reality what’s happening.”
