Thousands stranded after Bergamo airport halts flights, Rome protesters condemn ‘imperialist’ US following Venezuela strike, and more news from Italy this Monday.
Thousands stranded after Italy’s Bergamo airport halts flights
Thousands of airline passengers were left stranded overnight at the northern Italian airport of Bergamo Orio al Serio after traffic was halted on Saturday evening due to technical issues with the hub’s landing guidance system.
Il Corriere della Sera said the incident, which started at around 5pm on Saturday, forced airport authorities to cancel a total of 21 flights and divert another 34 to nearby airports.
An additional eight flights were rescheduled for Sunday.
Thousands of passengers spent the night between Saturday and Sunday at the airport, with social media footage showing several people sleeping on the floor of the baggage check-in area.
SACBO, the company that operates Bergamo airport, said in a statement on Sunday that the technical problem had been solved around midnight, but continued to warn passengers about potential knock-on flight delays.
Hundreds gather in Rome to decry ‘imperalist’ US after Venezuela strike
Hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the United States embassy in Rome on Saturday, holding Venezuelan flags and denouncing what they called international crimes by President Donald Trump’s administration.
The protest came after Trump announced the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro by US special forces during a raid on Caracas, adding that Washington would now “run” the South American country.
“We must mobilise against this coup by the United States,” Federico Manetti, from the Cambiare Rotta (‘Change Course’) youth group, told AFP.

The US “want to take back natural resources like oil, but also to bring to its knees a people that has been resisting US imperialism for 30 years,” he added.
Another man in the crowd called the protest a “must,” saying that the strike reflected the “imperialist attitude of the US and the West.”
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a staunch ally of Trump, defended the US military strike on Saturday, saying that it was a “legitimate” response to hybrid attacks against Washington’s security.
