I would love some artistic skill to go with my depression. Alas.

Well balanced (AKA boring) people don’t need the adulation of others and you need to be at least a bit unbalanced to think that getting on a stage is a good way to solve your insecurity issues.
I think there’s probably a lot of job-insecurity and of course career disappointment. Also working odd hours, erratic working practices, demanding directors/bosses.
You’re obviously more likely to be depressed when you are more likely to be poor.
