HELENA – Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks (FWP) is inviting the public to comment on several environmental assessments, scoping notices and open water fishing contests. Detailed information and submission instructions are available on FWP’s website.

One project under review is the Thompson Chain of Lakes State Park Fuels Reduction Project. FWP aims to reduce forest fuels to prevent severe fires and promote safety and aesthetics. Comments are due by Jan. 6.

In Hamilton, FWP proposes to renovate the Whittecar Shooting Range. This includes rebuilding the firing line shelter using Pittman Robertson funds. The proposal also includes updating the lease agreement with the Whittecar Rifle & Pistol Club to improve communication. Comments are due by Jan. 8.

FWP is also seeking feedback on open water fishing contests for 2026. The contests must adhere to state regulations, and conditions may be applied to minimize fish mortality and manage user conflicts. Comments are due by Jan. 12.

Another proposal involves removing goldfish from a pond near Thompson Falls using rotenone. This action aims to eliminate the invasive species without reintroducing other fish. Comments are due by Jan. 13.

FWP plans to transfer 200 walleye from Fort Peck Reservoir to Kuester Reservoir to control yellow perch populations and provide more fishing opportunities. This project is set for spring 2026, with comments due by Jan. 20.

Additionally, a forest thinning project at Lone Pine State Park is proposed to enhance forest health and diversity. Comments are due by Jan. 27.

Lastly, FWP proposes to draw down Maiden Spring Pond to remove northern pike, which threaten native and non-native fish species. A trout fishery would be established afterward. Comments are due by Jan. 30.
