If the plans are successful, holidaymakers may also be permitted to camp in Slovak vineyards and orchards, the TASR newswire reported.

Untapped potential

The sector has significant potential to help uncover lesser-known regions and promote regional products from local producers. Achieving this, however, will require investment in infrastructure, according to the project’s authors from the Slovak Agriculture and Food Chamber (SPPK). The chamber has joined forces with the Slovak Union of Grape Growers and Wine Producers (ZVVS) and the Slovak Association of Camping and Caravanning.

“Slovak wine, fruit and craft food have enormous potential, but we are using only a fraction of what they could bring to the regions,” said Andrej Gajdoš, head of SPPK, as quoted by TASR. “Combining gastronomy, the countryside and caravan tourism is a path that will allow producers to increase sales, offer tourists a meaningful experience and bring new income to municipalities. Every euro invested in an overnight stay in a caravan generates between €5 and €7 for the local economy.”

Companies and entrepreneurs could invest around €19 million from the Tourism Support Fund in 2025. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports plans to launch further calls for municipalities and entrepreneurs in 2026, with support covering up to 90 percent of total project costs.

SPPK, ZVVS and the caravanning association are ready to assist entrepreneurs and businesses seeking funding for projects focused on the development of caravanning, TASR reported.

“Caravanning is not just about spending the night in a vehicle,” said Rudolf Kuzma of the Slovak Association of Camping and Caravanning, as quoted by TASR. “It is a new form of travel — slow tourism that stays in the region, invests money locally, and which municipalities and companies reinvest in the development of the area.”

Slovakia is ideally suited to wine routes and culinary expeditions undertaken by caravan, he added.

“We want to attract Europe to Slovakia,” Kuzma said. “That is why it is important that Slovak farmers do not miss the upcoming call for the construction of caravan sites.”
