Lithuanian border guards have intercepted another “raft” carrying Belarusian cigarettes that floated down the Nemunas River.

A suspicious object in the river was spotted on Monday near the village of Bugieda in the Lazdijai District. In this section, the border between Lithuania and Belarus runs along the Nemunas.

The raft was pulled ashore. It was found to be carrying 640 packs of Belarusian cigarettes wrapped in plastic. For stability, paving slabs had been attached to the structure, while the raft itself was covered with snow and ice to make it resemble an ice floe.

The cigarettes are being temporarily stored at a border post. Administrative proceedings have been launched, the State Border Guard Service of Lithuania reported.
