The public library in the village of Korten, Taraclia District, has joined the national Library under the Christmas Tree initiative organized by the Government of Moldova, which is being held for the fourth year in a row. The campaign aims to encourage reading and enrich library collections through book donations.
As part of the initiative, the Korten library received more than 70 new titles, significantly updating and expanding its collection. Major donors include local writer and journalist Georgi Barbarov, who donated around 25 of his own books, including his latest work, linguist Dr Vasil Kondov, who contributed a collection of specialized publications in linguistics and philology, and Ivo Ivanov, a lawyer from Sofia, who donated a wide range of literature, including classic works by the renowned Bulgarian writer Ivan Vazov, historical novels, encyclopedias, and books for children and young people.
Active readers from the village also joined the campaign, contributing fiction and non-fiction titles, the library’s director Sofia Kavarzhik said. She added that the donations boost interest in reading and strengthen the role of the library as a cultural and educational centre for the local community.
The Library under the Christmas Tree campaign runs from December 1 to 24, with books collected at the government building distributed to school and public libraries across the country. In 2025, about 9,000 books were collected and delivered to educational centres and hospitals in Moldova, according to the Moldovan government’s website.
