ANN ARBOR, MI — This taco restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor will soon reopen in a larger space.
TAQ, which was formerly at 106 E. Liberty St., will be back in business down the street at 120 E. Liberty St. on Friday, Jan. 9, general manager Mark Gagalis Messmore confirmed.
The space at 120 E. Liberty St. formerly housed Turkish Village Cafe, which closed in September 2025 after operating for just one month.

Messmore, 38, said the restaurant outgrew its former spot due to its small interior and kitchen space. The old space had eight tables and six bar stools inside, whereas the new space will have 45 tables and about 30 bar stools, Messmore said.
TAQ will keep its outdoor space, which he said the restaurant became known for.
The restaurant will also have new coffee-based drinks and a new dessert item once it reopens, as well as “a couple of new preparations on tacos on the menu,” Messmore said.
TAQ had a large outdoor presence during summers but struggled during winters, he said.
“We struggled in the past because without the outdoor seating, it was really, really difficult to make ends meet at the old location,” Messmore said. “We’re excited and hopeful that the additional indoor seating will make us a little more of a year-round venue.”
He said the restaurant had to turn patrons away in the past due to its previous space constraints.
He said he does not know what will happen to the old spot.
“Opening the new restaurant just two doors down is our main focus and getting people to come down and dine with us and enjoy what they’ve been used to,” restaurant owner Cynthia Gagalis Messmore said.
TAQ, formerly known as La Taqueria before rebranding a few years ago, opened in Ann Arbor in 2018. The restaurant opened a second location in New York City in November 2023, Cynthia, 72, said.
New brunch spot Solana previously had plans to take over the 120 E. Liberty St. space but later canceled its opening plans.
